![]() “Recognizes that exposure to excessive light at night, including extended use of various electronic media, can disrupt sleep or exacerbate sleep disorders, especially in children and adolescents. To add further clout to that theory, the American Medical Association actually has done research on exposure to bright lights, and concluded that it can cause sleep issues: It’s a decent theory, and it looks like they’re interested in researching it further. Now I don’t know if it has helped my sleeping at all, but the developers of Flux suggest that reducing your exposure to ‘blue lighting’ (the default intense lighting put off by a computer display) may improve your ability to sleep. I let Flux adjust the displays warmth, and then I manually adjust the display brightness to a lower level, the two combine to offer a much more enjoyable experience when reading or spending hours in front of a screen late into the evenings. I’ve been using Flux for the past week and I can say that it has absolutely helped to reduce eye fatigue on late nights in front of my Mac. Flux Reduces Eye Strain & Eye Fatigue… and Helps Sleep? That is done just by pulling open the Flux menu and selecting to “Disable for an hour”. ![]() And yes, you can disable the app at any time, or set it to turn off for an hour if you’re going to do color sensitive work. The difference is entirely in overall warmth of the screen, but the intensity of that warmth depends on your lighting settings in the app. Default is on the left, and Flux adjusted is on the right: Moreover, if you need to have the monitor display images in their original hues and tones when working on a graphical project for instance, you can easily disable f.lux.You can’t really take a screenshot of the changes to offer a demonstration, so I cast a light sepia hue on a screenshot to give you an idea of the subtle change. It adjusts the screen light and colors to match the ambient light, sparing your eyes from making an effort to watch the monitor. Getting blinded by an overly-bright monitor during sunset or later at night is definitely not pleasant so an application such as f.lux is useful to anyone. Make the screen light and tones match your surroundings For instance, the “Movie Mode” preserves the colors and the shadow details but still displays the entire screen in warmer color tones that balances powerful contrasts. ![]() There are also predefined configuration modes in f.lux. f.lux comes with predefined configurations for reducing eyestrain, working late at night, using the PC in a low-light environment, and more. On the other hand, you have the possibility to adjust the screen lighting and colors manually, which is convenient in case you are in an environment with special lighting conditions. Therefore, if you find that you are not satisfied with the settings, you can go back and make more adjustments. It is worth mentioning that f.lux enables you to preview an entire day’s lighting changes in just a few seconds. Automatically adjusts the screen brightness and tone It then renders the appropriate light tones and intensity depending on this schedule. In other words, once your position is set on the map, the application calculates the precise time of the day and puts your PC on a 24-hour transition schedule. ![]() The main perk of f.lux is that once set up, it can automatically adjust the screen's brightness and color to the night or day conditions, without your intervention.Īt first launch, it requires you to enter your current location (the nearest city will do) to determine your local time and get information about the lighting conditions, depending on the time of the sunset and the sunrise. Sets a daily schedule based on your real location There are solutions such as protective glasses, but a more convenient alternative is using a dedicated software utility such as f.lux. The screen’s brightness and the blue light particularly, puts a strain on your eyes, especially if you are using the PC during nighttime. Working long hours in front of the computer has negative effects on your eyesight.
